Broken Dreams, Inc. is the first single released for Nowhere Generation. The song was originally released as part of an accompanying soundtrack for DC Comics' “Dark Nights: Death Metal” miniseries.
[Verse 1]
I have seen what you call progress
Every warning sign ignored
And there's a muffled voice of reason
But we can't make out the words
And though the balance we struck was delicate
There was a sense of right and wrong
We tried to stem this flow with a tourniquet
But now the patient's dead and gone
[Pre-Chorus]
When we owe more than we're worth
And they're changing the locks on the doors
We raise glasses high to thе bottom line
On a street engulfed in flamеs, yeah
But on goes the show
[Chorus]
When the city streets are barricaded
A chaos we ourselves created
When there's nothing left
Tell me, where will you go?
When the factories are automated
Broken dreams incorporated
Gather your things, but there's nowhere to go
[Verse 2]
We are children of lesser gods
Better angels, darker days
But we're holding onto this cause
Like palm trees in a hurricane
[Pre-Chorus]
We chase every second
In clothes that we slept in
But they still got away
[Chorus]
When the city streets are barricaded
A chaos we ourselves created
When there's nothing left, tell me
Where will you go? (Whoa-oh-oh)
When the factories are automated
Broken dreams incorporated (Whoa-oh-oh)
Gather your things, but there's nowhere to go
[Post-Chorus]
Nowhere to go
[Bridge]
Was this place ever our home?
Were these lines ever our own?
Are we just reading from the pages? Yeah
Just putting on a show?
Are you along just for the ride? (Hey, hey)
Keep all hands and feet inside (Hey, hey)
Will you steer us all to safety
So at least they know you tried?
[Breakdown]
Broken dreams
Broken dreams incorporated
Broken dreams
Broken dreams incorporated
Broken dreams
Broken dreams incorporated
Broken dreams
Broken dreams incorporated
No longer asking, we are taking
(Broken dreams incorporated)
And tomorrow will be what we make it
(Broken dreams incorporated)

“This song reminded me of Generation Lost, which was an early track of ours. It has a super-busy opening bassline – it’s classic Joe. Again it was one of the last songs I got to where Joe was, like, ‘Hey, are we doing this one?’ I always liked it, but I struggled with where to go with all the vocal...
It’s certainly touching on the changing landscape of labour, how it’s affecting people and how people are getting alienated from what it is to work. They’re trying to figure out what that looks like, and they’re getting left behind. In some ways, technology is making lives better for people and eras...
