Heath was inspired to write this after looking out of his airport-adjacent apartment window, seeing a plane fly by, and wondering: how does it feel to be a pilot and break through the clouds?
This song is hopeful for better times, even when our problems seem to obscure them.
Make your peace with what remains
Accept the things you cannot change
We'll return from whence we came
To the dust where we were made
But it's worth the fleeting pain
No one will defeat the grave
I see a break in the clouds
Maybe we'll find our way out
I wait, oh I wait
I wait, oh I wait
Make your peace with what you've done
Accept the grace your heart has shunned
We'll return from whence we came
We're the dust that He'll reclaim
But it's worth the fleeting pain
Knowing that we'll see His face
I see a break in the clouds
Maybe we'll find our way out
I wait, oh I wait
I wait, oh I wait
It's hard to write when your heart ain't in it
It's hard to wake up and call it livin'
It's hard to find the truth when we all pretending
And if you think we ain't pretending
That's proof that it's hard to admit it
It's hard to admit you gave valuable time
To someone that's lost and callous inside
But the fact is the past it reminds you every day
That you cannot rewind or retract any lines
I know it hurts to just function
But it's worse to make the same mistakes and learn nothing from it
It's easy to say we go to war with sympathy
Right before we take moral victories from mortal enemies
Is it original sin born in misery?
Or is it source that's giving me life?
The court is killing me
Or is it a cycle that we could break if we wanted?
Or the bondage of thoughts taking us hostage?
We've all hurt someone that didn't deserve it
It's hard to relent when your body gets hit with its purpose
When it's something they detest in the churches
Those Old Testament verses and devilish urges
It's good to steer towards a code of ethics
It ain't safe to walk around here with no direction
But if the compass is broken, defective
You ain't less of a person for broaching the question
When they tell you that you're not ok
Or that you're damaged goods 'cause of your mistakes
Tell 'em you're made in the imago Dei
Rock of ages, cleft for me, says it's washed away
And when they tell you that you're not ok
He tells you "be not dismayed"
Peace, be still and be not afraid
Now make your peace with what remains
