This is a version of a very famous folk ballad which is known to exist since the 17th century. “Barbara Allen” stay relevant and has been sang by many voices, and as folk tradition does, has had many verses.
[Verse 1]
In Scarlets Town, where I was born
There was a younger living
Made all youth cry "well a-day!"
Her name was Barbara Allen
[Verse 2]
It happened back in the 1809
When autumn leaves were falling
Sweet William's heart was falling to
The love of Barbara Allen
[Pre-Chorus]
He was so sick with love, he called her name while she was sleeping
And then in a silent way he waited for her, but she never came
[Chorus]
It's the pride that keeps us sane
And alive inside the twist
Pride and prejudice
[Verse 3]
She came up to Sweet William's to tell him of a secret
But when she came into the room
There was no life inside him
Then in the candle light she's falling on the floor weeping
For all the times she dreamed and never found to tell him of her love
[Chorus]
It's the pride that keeps us sane
And alive inside the twist
Pride and prejudice
[Outro]
In Scarlets Town, where I was born
Cathedral bells a-ringing
For a foolish man who died for love
Of the cruel Barbara Allen
