Are You Bored Yet? Lyrics

[Verse 1: Dylan Minnette with Clairo]
"What's wrong?"
You've been asking, but I don't have an answer
"How come?"
I'm still thinking, let's pretend to fall asleep now
When we get old, will we regret this?
Too young to think about all that shit
And stalling only goes so far when you've got a head start

[Chorus: Dylan Minnette with Clairo]
'Cause we could stay at home or watch the sunset
But I can't help from asking, "Are you bored yet?"
And if you're feeling lonely, you should tell me
Before this ends up as another memory
Will you tell the truth so I don't have to lie?
Will you tell the truth so I don't have to lie?

[Verse 2: Clairo]
Feels like I've known you my whole life
I can see right through your lies
I don't know where we're going
But I'd like to be by your side
If you could tell me how you're feeling
Maybe we'd get through this undefeated
Holding on for so long

[Chorus: Dylan Minnette with Clairo]
'Cause we could stay at home or watch the sunset
But I can't help from asking, "Are you bored yet?"
And if you're feeling lonely, you should tell me
Before this ends up as another memory
Will you tell the truth so I don't have to lie?
Will you tell the truth so I don't have to lie?

Wallows released Are You Bored Yet? on Fri Feb 01 2019.

What was the inspiration for the lyrics?

We were working on the demo, and I was just singing gibberish over it. There was a line in the chorus that sounded to me like ‘are you bored yet?’ It struck me as a really cool line and song title. So I wrote the rest of the lyrics around that title, and it just all started to make sense.

Why was this song chosen as the album's first single?

There’s a lot of different elements from the album in that song… The record goes a lot of places that track doesn’t. “Are You Bored Yet” is a nice, digestible, easy-to-listen-to, and relatable song in comparison to a lot of the other songs on the album. Lyrically, a lot of them are in a darker place...

How did the collaboration with Clairo come about?

Dylan Minette said in an interview with Atwood Magazine that:

We met Claire through other friends that we had. It all happened at SXSW last year. We made a bunch of friends around that time who knew Claire and one of them hooked us up over Instagram so she and I talked sometimes through that. When...

What did Wallows say about "Are You Bored Yet?"?

Cole wrote the demo to this track on his brand-new laptop after his friend spilled wine all over his old one, and he lost all his demos. “Are You Bored Yet?” ended up being the first idea on that computer… We tracked a pitched up version of Dylan’s voice in the demo and were inspired to have a femal...

According to Cole, what was going on when Wallows wrote this?

“Are You Bored Yet?” happened after my very good friend Paul Chiba spilled a bunch of wine on my computer. It had all my demos on it and stuff. But I was lucky enough to get a new computer because of Apple Care. And then the first demo that I put into my brand new Logic Pro X was the seedling of “Ar...

According to Dylan, what inspired the lyrics?

I was just kind of seeing gibberish and there’s something I said that, to me, sounded like, “Are you bored yet?” I was like, “Well that’s a cool, kind of funny, ironic song title.” So the title was there first. I knew I liked that title and wanted to center the lyrics around that. I ended up writing...

How did the collaboration with Clairo work?

We didn’t tell her what we wanted it to be lyrically. She knew what it was about. But she ended up just writing it, making it her own, and it made so much sense to me. If I’m this male narrator, then this is the girl in the relationship, and she is explaining that from her end, everything’s great. “...

Why does Cole thing Clairo was perfect for this song?

The first time we made the demo on the laptop, the second verse, I think, we had the idea that we wanted it to be a female voice. At first we thought it’d just be cool, A, for just hearing someone else in the album and, B, just cause we haven’t done that before, and I think it’d be a cool touch to t...

Who wrote the lyrics?

Cole, Dylan and Clairo (only the second verse). The demo version was written by Cole exclusively, and then Dylan came in to add more lyrics. Braeden explained to Fender:

Basically, Dylan and Cole both kind of wrote the lyrics ‘cause they were in relationships at the time and I wasn’t, at the time....

What does Dylan hate about this song?

At one stage, “Are You Bored Yet?” had a different intro, one that didn’t include guitar in the intro. When talking to Melodic Magazine in July 2019, Dylan mentioned that the track was mastered without the guitar intro, so the album would flow from “Sidelines” to “Are You Bored Yet?”, but the band’s...
