“Abigail” is about the breakdown of a relationship due to little to no communication. Although the song itself only covers the time on Abigail’s lunch break in the Jackson Square mall food court, the fact that there is very little dialogue during their lunch date shows the frailty of their relations...
[Verse 1]
Abigail, knew too well
What Zach was thinking
She watched his eyes stare at his empty, uneasy hand
He started sinking
In his chair, she knew Zach cared
But didn't know he was afraid
Of what tomorrow held
Well he'd feel better
If he stayed and Abby wondered aloud
[Chorus]
"Where did all the good plans go?
What do you feel?
I know you know"
[Verse 2]
Elevator music plays
In the food court in a mall
It was covering the empty sound
Of no conversation at all
And back to work, she said to Zach
"My break's almost done."
Oh Abigail I only wish you knew where I was coming from
And Abby wanted to know
[Chorus]
"Where did all the good plans go?
What do you feel?
I know you know"
[Bridge]
Then he turned and said
"I'll go home instead
Abigail, you're not making sense
My love, what have we become?
My love, what have we become?"
[Chorus]
Where did all the good plans go?
What do you feel
I know you know
Abigail was written by Arkells.
In a Reddit AMA, Max explained:
That was about my high school girlfriend. Her name was not Abigail, but Abigail kinda rhymed with “Not to well” and I liked that name. She did work at Limeridge Mall, briefly at the Foot Locker. Nothing more emotional than teen-romance, right?
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Arkells released the cords to numerous of their songs in what they called the “Flatten The Curve: Music Class” where fans were encouraged to learn their music and join in a live stream found on their Instagram daily. The official cords can be found here:
