I think a sixty second distance run could be a relaxation or mindfulness technique…a metaphor for focusing or tuning out. As most of Field Report’s songs deal with alcoholism, perhaps the wedding was a place of temptation. Another theme in the song seems to be restlessness, or people in your life...
You got that middle-distant look again
Fill the unrelenting minute
Or a sixty second distance run
Get out while you can get it
There was the weekend of the wedding
And I know somewhere there's video tape
Can you feel the river rising
For the camera and for the rage
Was I the only one?
Was I the only one?
The only ones I seem to love
Scan the sky with hawk's eyes
Find something they gotta kill
To find something to get startled by
Gonna teach my wings to work again
On a sixty second distance run
'Cause everyone that holds me close
They're starting fires that block the sun
Was I the only one?
Was I the only one?
How is it that the busiest streets
Are usually the quietest space?
And that quiet corner place
It only kept us awake
I've been trying every angle
I've been searching through the video tape
Without a sixty second distance run
Could anyone have seen the change?
