神聖かまってちゃん (Shinsei Kamattechan) is an alternative noise pop rock band from Chiba, Japan.
Formed in 2007, the band is made-up of vocalist, guitarist, and main composer の子 (Noko), keyboardist and programmer Mono, and drummer みさこ (Misako). Bassist and backing vocalist ちばぎん (Chibagin) was also a member of the band from its official inception up until 2020, when he left to pursue financial stability. Noko is the driving composer and songwriter behind the band, with most of their songs that make it to their official releases having existed for many years prior in the shape of solo demos made by Noko.
The band is known for their dark lyrics and frantic sound. Recurring lyrical themes include suicide, self-harm, loss of youth, mental illness, drug use, gender identity, and hatred for the school system. While in terms of sound, their music often features glitchy effects, dissonant keyboards, layered vocal melodies, painful shrieks, and bizarre production, with Noko being known for altering their vocals, pitch-shifting and distorting them. According to fans, the band’s first couple of albums are their most jarring and manic, before going into a more traditional alt pop-rock direction in the middle of their career, and then returning to form on their later albums, fusing the bizarre experimentation of their early work with the pop sensibilities that came after.
In recent years, the band has gained popularity in the west particularly for making opening and ending themes for the anime Shingeki No Kyojin (Attack On Titan)
