An actor whose range encompassed Shakespearean tragedy and musical comedy, Rex Harrison (1908-1990) interrupted a burgeoning career to serve in the Royal Air Force (rising to the rank of Flight Lieutenant) during World War II. His major honors all came after the war, including two Tony Awards and an Oscar for reprising his Tony-winning role in My Fair Lady. He was knighted by the queen in 1989.
