Mathew Barrett, known professionally as Matty B (not to be confused with MattyBRaps,) is a surfer and an Australian rapper from Perth.

As a young man, Matty B would often freestyle at parties, with his friends telling him to pursue a rap career. However, Matty had other ambitions, becoming a professional surfer in the 1990s, full-filling his childhood dream. He began rapping seriously in 1999, when the group Syllabolix was formed. His subject matter of his raps was often relative the people of Western Australia, as well as his love for surfing. He released his debut album in 2002 called “The Courageous LP“under Obese Records.

In 2006, Matty B relocated to the Gold Coast and formed his own label called B-Style Entertainment. He also released his EP “Simple But Effective.”

Since then, Matt performed at the Rosemount Hotel in memoriam of fellow MC Hunter in 2014 and has gone back to surfing. He is now a surfing instructor for the Margaret River Surf School, near the spot of one of his first concerts that initially gained Matt exposure.

In November 2022, Matt suddenly returned to music, releasing a boom bap hip hop record called Chronica. The album featured his mates from the Syllabolix crew, most notably Drapht and production from Optamus and Bias B.
