Manik MC is quietly making his mark within the burgeoning UK rap scene.
Constantly influenced by relationships and his inner-city surroundings, Manik’s principal inspiration has derived from contemporary social issues, from food banks to disability welfare cuts. Manik explores the marginalised and uncertain position of young people in Britain; a subject he is all too familiar with, having grown up as a young carer in the face of austerity. Through intricate rhymes and frank reflections, Manik reclaims and amplifies a collective voice frequently silenced.
Born to a Moroccan-Irish mother and an English father, Manik grew up between parents in Finsbury Park and Hackney. While his musical influences vary from British hip-hop pioneers Klashnekoff and Skinnyman, to US icons Outkast and The Roots, his introduction into performing began, unconventionally, through spoken-word poetry, competing in the Roundhouse and Barbican SLAM’s, amongst others. This ran alongside his passion for hip hop, grime and rapping in general, as well as providing a space for Manik to develop his performance. You can hear these early influences in Manik’s rapping, both in style and substance of content.
Manik released his debut EP ‘Midnight Express’ in September 2017, a project that featured guest appearances from Loyle Carner, Confucius MC, Jehst and Natty Wylah, as well as production from Rebel Kleff and Whoeva?, amongst others. In 2020, Manik released a new EP, Concrete Clouds.
