About Jobriath

Jobriath(‘46-'83 also known as Jobriath Boone or Jobriath Salisbury),born Bruce Wayne Campbell, was an American glam rock superstar. He was the first openly gay rock star to be signed to a major record label.

His musical career started very early, since he was a child prodigy.
While he was in High school, he wrote 2 movements of his syphony, but for unknown reasons, he never completed it. Jobriath formed a small group called “The Last Three” in the same years with the help of a teacher that chose two students, Marty and Grace, as part of the trio. He later joined a band called “Pidgeon”(signed with the Decca records), where he was singer and played both keyboards and guitar. They recorded a self titled album inspired by many artists such as “The Mamas and the Papas”, “Peter, Paul and Mary” and “The Jefferson Airplane”; its genre was some sort of psychedelic sunshine pop or folk. They released the single “Rubber Bricks” shortly after the first album.

He was taken by the police and arrested, and stayed in the military psychiatric hospital of Valley Forge General Hospital where he suffered from his first breakdown. He broke away and went to California, where he became an alcoholist and a drug addict and worked as a prostitute.

His life changed completely when he met Jerry Brandt, that made him the most forgotten Rock'n'roll Icarus, he made him a contract with Elektra, rumored to be $500.000, after getting him back to New York.

Jobriath, then, wrote his first solo album, self titled; He was America’s Bowie, or Marc Bolan from T.Rex, he was “the Act of tomorrow”. That’s how his “superhype” started.

“Jobriath is going to be the biggest artist in the world. He is a singer, dancer, woman, man. He has the glamour of Garbo. He is beautiful", says Brandt to Melody Maker in April 1974, “It’s Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles, and now Jobriath.”

But his album was a failure and the hype backfired, everyone hated him, his “rock and roll fairy” personality was ripped apart, like a real life Ziggy Stardust. The same thing kind of happened again with his second album, Creatures of the Street featuring John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, with costumes by Stephen Sprouse and photography by Gered Mankowitz.
He retired in 1975 and moved in the Chelsea Hotel in New York inside a pyramid and sang in pubs and restaurants and went back to his job as a prostitute.

Morrisey, a big fan of Jobriath, asked him to go on tour with him and the Smiths to re-start his career as a musician, not knowing that the singer had died of AIDS in 1983 after being ill for 2 years.

Jobriath, aka Bruce Wayne Campbell, was one of rock 'n' roll's greatest tragedies. Initially touted as the "American David Bowie" via a massive marketing campaign spearheaded by Elektra Records and infamous impresario Jerry Brandt (who'd worked with Carly Simon, Chubby Checker, and the Rolling Stones), the former Hair actor-turned-glam rocker instead faced a swift and vicious backlash.
