The son of an opera singer, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was born in St. Petersburg and studied in Russia, though success carried him to Paris ahead of the Soviet revolution. His early modernist ballet works The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring established his reputation as a composer whose music offended the sensibilities of Paris' musical establishment. In later years, however, his music went through distinct phases of development that included neoclassical, jazz, and serialism.
