Diane Renay (b. 1945) rose to fame in 1964 with her hit “Navy Blue,” about a boyfriend who joins the Navy. The song gave Renay a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the Adult Contemporary chart. Though she was at first accused of being little more than a nautically-oriented Lesley Gore clone, Renay built up an audience in her own right: her next single, “Kiss Me Sailor,” continued her chart success, becoming her second Top 30 pop hit. Renay’s debut album, Navy Blue, was released in 1964 and gave Renay a Top 75 entry on Billboard’s Top LPs chart.
Renay continued to regularly release singles throughout 1964 and, more sporadically, through the rest of the decade. She notched three further chart entries – “Growin' Up Too Fast,” “It’s In Your Hands,” and “Watch Out Sally!” – but none cracked the Top 100 of the pop chart. Renay returned to the music world in the 2000s, releasing a combination covers album and retrospective, Diane Renay Sings Some Things Old & Some Things New, in 2008. In 2011, Renay released a Greatest-Hits compilation, close to 50 years after her first hit.
