About Black Grape

Black Grape are an English alternative rock band formed in 1993 by singer-songwriter Shaun Ryder after the dissolution of his previous band Happy Mondays.

Ryder and his longtime friend and Happy Mondays' dancer, Bez recruited rappers Paul “Kermit” Leveridge and drummer Ged Lynch from the Ruthless Rap Assassins (who were associated with Hulme/Manchester’s baggy movement), and guitarist Paul “Wags” Wagstaff from the baggy/Madchester/ indie-dance group Paris Angels. The line-up was completed by American producer Danny Saber, who produced all the group’s songs.

Their music is a mix of dance, alt-rock, funk and hip-hop, with electronic programming and samples.

Black Grape fell apart during the supporting tour for Stupid, Stupid, Stupid in 1998, with Ryder first firing Kermit, then letting the rest of the band go.

He, Kermit, and Danny Saber performed as Black Grape for a one-off concert in 2010 and officially reunited in 2015, celebrating the 20th anniversary of It’s Great When You’re Straight…Yeah.

In 2017 the group released its third album, Pop Voodoo.
