Björk Guðmundsdóttir (born 21 November 1965) is an Icelandic singer-songwriter best known for her uniquely alternative pop music. She received her first record deal at the age of eleven, after a recording of her singing was sent to the RÚV radio station (at the time, Iceland’s only radio station). She subsequently released her first album, eponymously named Björk, in December of 1977.
During the 80s, she was involved in Reykjavík’s post-punk scene as a member of Tappi Tíkarrass, KUKL and, eventually, the alt-rock group The Sugarcubes. However, she wasn’t fond of rock music, and relocated to London to pursue a solo career.
Debut, released in 1993, incorporated elements of London’s dance music scene, like house and the burgeoning trip-hop. Over her three-decade career, Björk has developed an eclectic musical style that mainly consists of electronic art pop. She is known for her innovative music videos, her singular voice, her deeply personal lyrics and her precise arrangements.
