Ambrose Bierce was an American author known for infusing his writing with an attitude of scorn for for sentimental humans. The theme of many of his works centers on warfare and the cruel joke it plays on humans. Born in 1842 to a farming family in Ohio, Bierce was educated by exploring his father’s library. He fought in the US Civil War for the Union. He married in 1871 and moved to England, where he started to produce most of his work. His most critically acclaimed novels were The Devil’s Dictionary and The Cynic’s Word Book. In 1913, Bierce set off for Mexico to partake in a revolution where he was never seen again.
