[Musical intro]
[Spoken Word]
Over 300 years ago, my people were in pain.
Taught how to live and work, taught how to behave.
But those 300 years are like 300 days,
Cause as I look at my people today, I still see slaves.
I guess you can say we’re the new slaves.
The he, me, she, and you, slaves.
My sisters slaves to the 7 for 27
My brother slaves to the new J’s and 2Ks
But it’s okay, as long as society says so.
Spiritually dying everyday, allowing our human flesh to grow.
We used to live in fear of racial oppression, now we live in fear of the world’s perception.
So scared of a reaction that we result to inaction, sit back while life’s happening and some one picks of your blessing.
Now that’s an interception.
So stop stressing.
The Devil is known to jack sons outta the Kingdom like Michael
And living too Off the Wall ain’t to good for your soul
But you are not alone.
I look at the Man in the Mirror and I see that
The best me is me, so the best you is you.
Live for God and not the world, cause that’s all that matters in the end.
That line didn’t match the last last, but the truth does;t always rhyme.
So, open your eyes and make up your mind to be the person you truly are inside.
Don’t let that peer pressure change you.
Cause things that are meant for others can around and rearrange you.
Putting up with nonsense you’d never deal with.
Enslaved by the acceptance, and the feeling you get
When you feel that feeling that you’ve never felt before and you think that’s it’s love.
And you forget the one who first loved you from above.
But you’re lusting over every thing that moves,
Searching for a love that ain’t even true.
So we look,
And we take and we take until there’s nothing left to grab
Taking from others just to get something to have.
Most times it’s things we don’t even need but we’re so enslaved by material things, enslaved by the greed.
But if our ancestors couldn’t get it, I guess we gotta get it for em
But all the signs God gives us, we just ignore them
Taking what we want and not what we need
If we’re taking anything, we need to take heed
And listen to what God says, cause we’re reverting back to the old days.
My people, we’re singing lullabies, and now’s the time to wake.
[Outro]
First and foremost, before I even get this thing started, I want to give a huge thank you to God for everything that he has done and everything that he will do. Huge shoutout to the whole Good Vibes Only family, Grammy Gang family, the entire city of Memphis, and the few friends I do have at Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark Atlanta. I have love for everybody, but if I mess with you, you already know. If you have to guess, I probably don't. That's pretty much all I have to say. Josh Johnson EP.
