As with most Hard-Fi songs, “Suburban Knights” is about the pains of life in Staines.
Fun fact: Staines actually changed its name to Staines-upon-Thames after years of being ridiculed not just by Hard-Fi, but also by Sacha Baron Cohen’s alter ego, Ali G.
[Intro]
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy)
(Oh-oh-ohhhhh)
(Ah-ah-ahhh-ahhhhh)
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy)
[Verse 1]
Suburban days
They last so long
In shop and office
We sing our song, we all sing
We ain't got nothing
Nothing to do
A big fat nothing
Nothing for me, nothing for you
[Verse 2]
Suburban dreams
Just out of reach
Work 'till you die
That's what they teach you at school
With that in mind
What's there to lose
My friends and I
Doped up on TV fags and booze
[Pre-Chorus]
Hear them all singing!
[Chorus]
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) We're the ones that you've forgotten
(Oh-oh-ohhhhh) But we will not be denied!
(Ah-ah-ahhh-ahhhhh) Coming out of the shadows
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) Yeah, we rock the satellites!
[Verse 3]
Suburban Nights
They get so hot
People get angry
We sing our song, we all sing
But global terror, they say
We are at war
But ain't got time for that, 'cos
These bills keep dropping through my door
[Pre-Chorus]
Hear them all singing!
[Chorus]
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) We're the ones that you've forgotten
(Oh-oh-ohhhhh) But we will not be denied!
(Ah-ah-ahhh-ahhhhh) Coming out of the shadows
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) Yeah, we rock the satellites!
[Bridge]
And all these people who criticise us
Well, we're only sayin' what we're seeing with our own eyes
This one-way system it ain't, it ain't paradise
Not everybody wants to race, wants to fight
Ah-oh, ah-oh, a-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
[Pre-Chorus]
Hear them all singing!
[Chorus]
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) We're the ones that you've forgotten
(Oh-oh-ohhhhh) But we will not be denied!
(Ah-ah-ahhh-ahhhhh) Coming out of the shadows
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) Yeah, we rock the satellites!
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) We're the ones that you've forgotten
(Oh-oh-ohhhhh) Out of mind, out of sight
(Ah-ah-ahhh-ahhhhh) Coming out of the shadows
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy) Coming live via satellite
[Outro]
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy)
(Oh-oh-ohhhhh)
(Ah-ah-ahhh-ahhhhh)
(Ay-ay-ayyyyyy)
