Kathy Yaeji Lee, known professionally as Yaeji, is a Korean-American singer, DJ, and music producer based in New York. Yaeji’s music is a mix of house music and hip hop with vocals in both English and Korean.
During her college years, Yaeji began experimenting with DJing as a hobby and as a result, began DJing at house parties. Two years later, she began writing and producing her own music. After she graduated from college, Yaeji moved to New York and began working on new music. Yaeji did release music on SoundCloud during her college years; however, these songs were later deleted.
Yaeji soon released her first single, “New York ‘93”, under her record label, Godmode. The release of “New York ‘93” was quickly followed by her cover of “Guap” which gained her more recognition in the music community.
In 2017, Yaeji released her self-titled EP, Yaeji. Yaeji began gaining attention after her first Boiler Room session which included a remix of Drake’s “Passionfruit”. She later released it officially on SoundCloud.
Yaeji’s big break came in July of 2017 when her single, “Drink I’m Sippin On” was released on 88srising’s Youtube channel. The video garnered over one million views in two weeks.
Yaeji released her second EP, EP2 in late 2017. This album received significant praise from critics and fans alike. Yaeji also performed at Coachella 2018 following the successful release of “Raingurl”:
