Y?N-Vee (pronounced “why envy”) was an R&B girl group signed to PMP/Def Jam in the early 90’s consisting of members Natasha “Sonshine” Walker, Tescia “Vayne” Harris, Yenan “Yesz” Ragsdale, and Nicole “Nic Nam” Chaney. The women sported a trademark look of matching hip-hop gear accentuated with a feminine detail like a visible thong or black brassiere.
Their only album, the self-titled Y?N-Vee was released in 1994. The group had modest success with its lead single, the Rick James-sampling, marijuana-affirmative “Chocolate.” The ladies had hoped to build on that success with their next single and video for “I’m Goin' Down” in 1995. Unfortunately, queen-in-waiting Mary J. Blige released her hit cover of the same song a day after theirs, overtaking it on sales charts and airwaves.
Group member Yenan “Yesz” Ragsdale succumbed to a battle with cancer on December 12, 2015.
