William Cowper (1731-1800) first showed a love of poetry at university, but the strains of his legal studies and being forbidden from marrying his cousin led him to a breakdown and a suicide attempt. He survived by converting to evangelical Christianity, but he remained tormented by religious doubts and depression for the duration of his life. He is well known for his hymns.
