Will Butler is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known as a former member of Arcade Fire (and younger brother of frontman Win). Will began his solo career with the release of Policy in 2015, continuing to write and tour with Arcade Fire until announcing his departure from the band in March 2022 for “no acute reason beyond that I’ve changed—and the band has changed—over the last almost 20 years. Time for new things.” For his fourth post-Arcade Fire album, Butler united members of his touring band (including wife Jenny Shore) to form the group Will Butler + Sister Squares. Butler and Owen Pallett’s original score for the movie Her was nominated for an Academy Award in 2014.
Butler was born in Truckee, California in 1982 and raised in The Woodlands, Texas. He studied poetry and slavic studies at Northwestern University and holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard.
