Whiskeytown is an alt-country band from Raleigh, North Carolina whose popularity stems from a large and enthusiastic cult following.
The band was formed by singer/songwriter/banjoist/guitarist, Ryan Adams. Adams demonstrates unique talent as a songwriter, despite having a brilliance that is coupled with a volatile temper and an unhealthy appetite for alcohol. He is notorious for his outbursts and erratic performances, and countless disputes with bandmates (some of them on-stage). The band’s other members include fiddler Caitlin Cary, guitarist Phil Wandscher, bassist Steve Grothmann, and drummer Eric “Skillet” Gilmore.
The band’s music is heavily influenced by the work of Gram Parsons, Uncle Tupelo, and The Replacements.
