Wesley Willis (1963-2003) was an American musician and street artist diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Wesley was born in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Chicago’s projects as one of 10 children of parents who had a violent relationship. He spent time in several foster homes and was essentially raised by two older brothers, who went with him from home to home.
“Hellride” was the term used by Wesley to describe his encounters with “demons”, which occurred mainly on the CTA bus lines in Chicago. Wesley, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, often claimed that demons were trying to ruin his “Harmony Joy Music” or “Joy Rides”. He named the demons “Heartbreaker,” “Nervewrecker,” and “Meansucker.”
Over his music career, Wesley released more than 50 albums, many of which were self released. He also formed the group “The Wesley Willis Fiasco,” releasing one album.
Many of Wesley’s songs featured him describing acts of bestiality. He stated this was because the lyrics grossed out the demons, and they’d leave him alone for a while.
