Welton Irie, born as Welton Dobson, 1961 in Jamaica, is a reggae/dancehall deejay who was mostly active in the early 1980s.
He began his career performing as “Welton” on the “Sir John the President” sound system in 1976. Around that time he was largely influenced by Ranking Trevor.
Around 1977 he teamed up with The Lone Ranger and they worked at Studio One putting out some singles, most notable being “Chase Dem Crazy” and “Big Fight”. It was during his time at Studio One that Welton changed his name to “Welton Irie”, apparently after Coxsone’s recommendation.
By the early 1980s he was working with Junjo Lawes and his Volcano sound system. In the mid 1980s he became a selector for Gemini and stopped deejaying. He did some live performances in the 2000s and in the late 2010’s he was hosting a show at the Fun Vibes Radio.
