We Are King is a musical group consisting of twin sisters Paris & Amber Strother. Originally, the group was simply called King, and also included singer Anita Bias who parted ways amicably with the group in 2019.
The group independently released their EP The Story in 2011. Its title track was featured on GLAMOUR‘s Top Songs Playlist. The fan-favorite “Supernatural” became NPR’s Song of the Day, and the dreamy “Hey” was featured in the 2014 motion picture About Last Night.
Their EP made music lovers and tastemakers alike into fans, attracting the ears of soul music juggernauts like Erykah Badu, Questlove, and the late Prince. With a bit of help from the latter, the ladies of We Are King wrote and produced their debut album We Are King, released in 2016. The album went on to secure a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2018.
The album consisted of 12 songs, including the previously released singles “In The Meantime” (Top 2013 Pick by NPR, The Guardian UK, and Buzzbands LA) and “Mister Chameleon.” Paris would produce the songs, while primary singers Amber and Anita would work together on songwriting and vocal arrangements.
Ebony Magazine: “KING bypasses the impulse to categorize musicians into a singular box by falling somewhere in the utopian realm of nostalgic R&B, futuristic soul and folksy-bluesy jazz.“
Okayplayer: “It’s not hard to tell what all the fuss is about; sophisticated pop harmonies that would seem more appropriate to past-masters than newcomers–yet never feel anything less than breezily accessible, mostly because of a certain emotional purity to the songwriting. The ladies of KING are just as refreshingly pleasant as their recordings…this just seems to confirm the eerie suspicion that though only two are blood-sisters, all three are spiritual triplets.”
