George Washington Phillips was an American gospel and gospel blues singer and instrumentalist. Born in Texas, Phillips was a farmer and a street preacher. He played an instrument of his own invention, probably built from several other broken instruments. He recorded about 18 songs from 1927-1929 for Columbia Records, and died in 1954.
