Born in Dublin and raised in Stuttgart, Victor Herbert (1859-1924) was a highly successful composer of operettas in America between 1890 and the beginning of World War I. Though he composed in a great many other genres of music, he was best known for light stage works such as Babes in Toyland and Naughty Marietta. After the war, his European-influenced (and squarely 19th-century) works fell out of fashion, but the Tin Pan Alley composers who supplanted him still looked to him as a role model, especially for his work as a co-founder of ASCAP and crusader for composer’s legal and financial rights.
