Underoath are a six-piece metalcore band from Tampa, Florida. They were active from 1997-2013 but announced a reunion tour to celebrate the ten year anniversaries of their seminal albums They’re Only Chasing Safety and Define The Great Line in 2016. Aaron Gillespie is the only remaining original member of the band, but the current line-up is that as featured on the recording of They’re Only Chasing Safety, regarded as the turning point in their career.
They are regarded as icons of the alternative-emo scene that sprung out of the hardcore and metal scenes in the 2000s. Their earlier material was heavily influenced by a Christian worldview, but this changed through the years as band members' personal beliefs also changed, although some still remain active believers in Christianity.
In February 2018, the band released a new album (recorded in secret) titled Erase Me, which released in April of 2018. Erase Me recieved mixed reviews from metal fans as the band shifted towards a more mainstream sound. The album included three explicit tracks with the use of three “f-bombs” and the use of “shit” on their tracks “On My Teeth,” “ihateit,” and “Hold Your Breath.”
