About Twilight 22

Producer Gordon Bahary, who had previously worked with Stevie Wonder, teamed up with Broadway actor Joseph Saulter and reggae veteran Errol Moore for the short-lived project Twilight 22 in 1983.

It was a time when few Caucasians were involved in rap. Bahary told Songfacts the record label’s point of view on the project:

They were trying to hide that I was white. I said, ‘Call it whatever you want. Call me Twilight Zone for all I care.’ Then the A&R guy said, ‘What about Catch 22?’ I said, ‘Call it Twilight 22.’

The group released six singles and an album before disbanding to work on other projects. But the group still managed to go down in hip hop history when their first recording, the electro-funk jam “Electric Kingdom”, became the 8th rap song ever to appear on Billboard’s Hot 100.
