About Trapt

Trapt is an American rock band that formed in Los Gatos, California in 1995, best known for their 2003 hit “Headstrong”. Former drummer Monty Montgomery explained the origin of the band’s name:

It was born out of a youthful angst, feeling that the world around was controlling and restricting, and literally trapping us.

After releasing a demo, then two albums independently, Trapt turned down an offer from Immortal Records and signed with Warner Brothers Records. Their self-titled album came out in late 2002 and its lead single “Headstrong” topped three US rock charts and reached the top 20 on the Hot 100, sending the album up the charts too with an eventual Platinum certification. Two follow-up singles also performed well on the rock charts.

Their second album was moderately successful, but didn’t meet Warner’s expectations so the label stopped responding to the band:

We didn’t like the situation. We asked them to let us off the label. There was no official parting of the ways; we just said, ‘We’re leaving,’ and there was no response, so we were out of there.

The band shopped their new recordings to several labels, signing with Eleven Seven Records (overseen by Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx). Sixx added Trapt to their 2008 Crue Fest tour alongside Papa Roach, Buckcherry and Sixx:AM. Their two albums for Eleven Seven both peaked in the top 30 with their combined five singles charting modestly on the rock charts.

In late 2012, no longer with Eleven Seven, Trapt toured the US before releasing their sixth album Reborn the following January with the short-lived Epochal Artist Records. Its first two singles finding moderate success on rock radio. Their next two albums were released on their own Crash Course Records label.

In 2021, frontman Chris Taylor Brown made headlines for controversial posts made on the band’s official social media accounts supporting the far-right, neo-fascist, white nationalist Proud Boys and appearing to condone statutory rape.
