About TRAEDONYA!

TRAEDONYA! is an American recording artist, singer-songwriter, poet, record producer, brand ambassador, model and youth advocate. From Hip Hop to Jazz, Blues to Soul, Electro to Dance, Reggae and Funk, TRAEDONYA! has recorded and performed with several celebrated artist.

Born Traedonya Chequelle, the sassy lyricist was raised in New York City. With the direction of Tuff City Records executive Aaron Fuchs, TRAEDONYA!’s self titled studio debut was released and featured her single “Do The Boogaloo” in 1987. Produced by Errol “Pumpkin” of “The King of The Beats” fame, “Do The Boogaloo” hit the UK’s Hot 100 and became a cult classic in Germany and other parts of Europe.

After leaving Tuff City Records, TRAEDONYA! would become one of the founding members of the urban youth program The Blackwatch Movement. The youth program was in association with activist Sonny Carson (The Miseducation Of Sonny Carson) and his son Lumumba Carson. The Blackwatch Movement included several musical groups that made their songs the vehicles to encourage and inspire urban youth to love and embrace their culture and their African roots.

One of the musical groups that were part of The Blackwatch Movement was X-Clan. TRAEDONYA! would become the premier singer and vocalist for X-Clan’s studio debut album released on Island Def Jam and would also appear on several other recording artist' projects that were part of The Blackwatch Movement. While with The Blackwatch Movement, Lumumba Carson known as Professor X The Overseer’s solo debut album “Years Of The Nine” on Island Def Jam would feature the first single of that same title, where TRAEDONYA! and rap artist IsIs would collaborate with Professor X.

The single “Years Of The Nine” stayed on Billboards top 100 for weeks and spawned three consecutive singles for Professor X The Overseer on Billboard Charts.
While recording her new project and pursuing her solo career with Hip Hop, Soul producer Large Professor, Anton Pukshansky and Curtis Watts were introduced to TRAEDONYA! at Power Play Studios in Queens New York. With Anton Pukshansky and Curtis Watts producing the music, TRAEDONYA! wrote and sang over the cool funky soulful grooves. The band played many different venues throughout the New York City area. Soon after meeting, the trio landed a major record deal on Elektra Warner Brothers Records. Sample This! recorded one self tiltled full length studio album on Elektra Records.

The record received critical acclaim yet had moderate success due to the changing climate at their record company.

Sample This! recorded a sophmore album for Elektra, yet it went unreleased. Where it has always been unpopular to go against the record company in a court case, after not releasing their second studio album as agreed, TRAEDONYA!, Anton Pukshansky and Curtis Watts know as Sample This! presented Elektra Warner Brothers Records with a lowly publicized lawsuit for breaching their contract. The trio won their lawsuit with grounds of neglect after being in court for several years, where they received ownership of their studio recording masters.
After the Sample This! trio disbanded, attending a Jazz Conservatory was in sight for TRAEDONYA! . While attending the Jazz conservatory at New School in New York City, TRAEDONYA! studied with Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Chico Hamilton and Reggie Workman. While in pursuit of her Fine Arts Degree, TRAEDONYA! decided to make a bold move and left the conservatory to pursue her musical ambitions in Europe.
While in Europe, TRAEDONYA! recorded and toured. London became her second home and she dropped her suitcases in the Dalston area. Her musical palette expanded while traveling through Europe as she fell in love with Garage, Drum n Bass and other sounds.
In 2003 TRAEDONYA! introduced her new sound on Prohibition Entertainment with the single “Beloved”.

“Beloved”, was well received, the song allowed her to perform and travel to new areas that she did not before. The European Press gave her the moniker “Queen Of Hipopera” because of the way the opera like vocals are belted over the heavy bass driven Hip Hop beat.

In 2010 “I’ll Give It 2 U” was released, the song was produced by Tony Ozier and Beats Galore. The single was a DJ favourite and spawned remixes internationally. Prohibition then released a full EP with mixes of the single. “I’ll Give It 2 U” The Remixes featured producers from Ohio, Indonesia, Italy, France and England. With it’s different genres, three mixes from the “I’ll Give It 2 U” The Remixes EP hit the DJ Times Charts in various categories and charted on the college radio circuits.

Behind the scenes, TRAEDONYA! has been part of various charitable events and projects for women and children. She also served as the brand ambassador for Fanatic and for the Band and Me App.

In 2017 TRAEDONYA! and her team of producers developed a well praised project dedicated to five Black Icons In the sports arena. The Four Portraits EP in honour of Serena Williams, Jim Brown, Derek Jeter, Pele' and Kareem Abdul Jabbar is a beautiful mix of Classical, R&B, Merengue, Blues and Soul.
