Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson, professionally known as Tove Lo (pronounced Too-veh-Lu), is a Swedish singer-songwriter born and raised in Djursholm, Sweden.
She first rose to prominence for her single, “Habits (Stay High)“, which became a top ten hit in the U.S. a year after its 2013 release, a dark breakup anthem that generated such Internet buzz that it led to a deal with Universal. “Habits“ and its follow-up, “Out of Mind“, appeared on her debut EP Truth Serum, in 2014.
Later that year, her debut album, Queen of the Clouds, arrived, featuring “Habits“. The album was a Top 10 hit in Sweden and a Top 20 hit in the U.S. and U.K., and the subsequent single “Talking Body“ was a similar success.
She returned in 2016 with her second album, Lady Wood, which delivered more of her signature mix of cool synth-pop and frank lyrics. Buoyed by the singles “Cool Girl“ and “True Disaster“, the album hit number 1 in Sweden, and landed at number 11 on the U.S. Billboard 200.
In 2017, Tove Lo released her third album, BLUE LIPS (lady wood phase II), a companion piece to Lady Wood that featured the single “disco tits“.
In September 2019, she released her fourth album, *Sunshine Kitty, featuring collaborations with Kylie Minogue, ALMA, and Doja Cat.
Her nickname comes from a lynx (“Lo” in Swedish) she couldn’t stop staring at:
Three years old, I was standing with my face pressed against the glass,“ she recalls. "I didn’t want to leave. So my parents started calling me Tove Lo and it stuck.
Nilsson’s stage name is usually mispronounced Tōv Lō by her non-Swedish speaking fans. “For the record, it’s pronounced "Too-veh Lu” but Tove doesn’t mind if people approach it phonetically."
