A brewer’s son, Thomas Morley (1557?-1602) wrote both secular and sacred music during the great flowering of the English madrigal, bringing in Italian influences to the form. He is one of two contemporary composers known to have set the song lyrics of William Shakespeare to music, and though a collaboration between them has never been proven (despite the two living in the same parish), it is possible that he composed music directly for Shakespeare’s plays.
