About Thomas Leer

Thomas Leer (1953- ) is a Scottish keyboardist and songwriter best known for his work with German singer Claudia Brücken in the synthpop band Act.

Leer first began performing during the height of the London punk scene, playing in a succession of experimental pop bands before self-releasing his debut single, “Private Plane” in 1978. “Plane” was recieved to incredible critical acclaim and is considered a classic of DIY minimal-wave techno. He released several synth-pop records on Cherry Red Records in the early 80s before signing to Arista, on which he released his first full-length album.

In 1987, he formed Act with Claudia Brücken and signed to Zang Tumb Tuum. The pair released one album and four singles before breaking up one year later due to record company mischief and legal issues concerning an uncleared ABBA sample. Brücken went on to a solo career, but Leer retired.

14 years later, Leer happened to hear a set by The Future Sound of London on a Ninja Tune-run radio show in 2003. It lit a fire underneath him and Leer felt creatively rejuvenated. Two years later, he released his first full-length studio album in 17 years. He continues to release new music on his Bandcamp page to the present day.
