Formed in Dallas in 2000, Secret Machines are often facilely swept into the same new wave revival camp as Franz Ferdinand, Interpol (with whom they’ve toured), and other Class of 2000 bands. Though the band are similarly hooky, they tread a slightly more ambitious path, one that owes a considerable debt to the space pop of the Flaming Lips. Their sprawling compositions bring together tuneful psychedelia, shoe-gazer dreaminess, and arena-rocking glam, updating prog rock for the MySpace generation.
