The Pop Group originated in Bristol, England in 1977 as a post-punk band comprising of Mark Stewart (vocals), John Waddington (guitar), Gareth Sager (guitar, piano, and saxophone), and Bruce Smith (drums). Simon Underwood played bass for the band until 1980, being replaced by Dan Catsis. The Pop Group’s sound blended punk, free jazz, funk, noise rock, and dub – creating a unique and challenging listening experience.
