The Chantays made their presence known in 1963 with their breakthrough surf rock instrumental hit, “Pipeline”. Hailing from Orange County, California, Bob Spickard (guitarist), Brian Carman (guitarist), Bob Welch (drummer), Warren Waters (bass guitarist), and Rob Marshall (keyboardist and pianist) formed The Chantays in 1961 while attending Santa Ana High School. The Chantays used a mix of keyboards, guitars, piano, and drums to create a unique west coast rock sound, which would soon be adopted by many other bands.
The Chantays have been honored numerous times, with Pipeline being considered one of the greatest songs of all time, and being placed on the list of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Along with that, OC Weekly Magazine listed The Chantays as one of the best Orange County bands, having a street in Santa Ana being named after them (Chantays Way), and being included in Hollywood’s Rock Walk on April 12th, 1996.
The Chantays are still active today, after the passing of founding member Brian Carman and longtime member Gil Orr. The current line up consists of Bob Spickard, Bob Welch, Warren Waters, Rob Marshall, Ricky Lewis and Brian Nussle.
