The Abyssinians are a roots reggae group from Jamaica. They are best known for their close harmonies and promotion of the Rasta movement through their music.
The group formed in 1968, spearheaded by Bernard Collins and Donald Manning. Lynford and Carlton Manning, among others, were also members of The Abyssinians. The three Manning brothers were members of an associated rocksteady act, Carlton and the Shoes.
The Abyssinians’ first and most recognisable track, Satta Massagana, borrows heavily from Carlton Manning’s “Happy Land.” The song is a Rasta hymn, which is sung in English and Amharic, an Ethiopian Semitic language.
