“One of the most exciting voices in hip hop”, Tasman Keith is a Gumbaynggir rapper from Bowraville, New South Wales. He is known for his razor-sharp flow, commanding delivery and high energy tracks with powerful production. Tasman Keith’s music is driven by his desire to carry on the storytelling traditions of his family. Tasman’s father was the trailblazer hip hop artist Wire MC, and he has further musical heritage from his grandfather and uncles.
Tasman did not listen to Australian rap growing up, instead being greatly influenced by the stories of struggle, trauma, and racism in American rap. This coupled with his youthful fandom of Michael Jackson underpins his use of an American accent in his music.
Tasman Keith broke onto the scene with the release of his debut studio single “Might Snap” in 2017. He followed up in 2018 with his debut EP Mission Famous, named after his hometown Bowraville’s notorious mission. The EP was the focus of a VICE Asia documentary. In 2019, Tasman Keith collaborated with Stevie Jean and released the EP Evenings. Its lead single “Prey” was nominated Song of the Year and Film Clip of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards. Both EPs were nominated for the AIR Awards Best Independent Hip Hop Album or EP in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
After releasing a string of singles, Tasman released his most recent solo EP To Whom It May Concern in 2020. Towards the end of 2020, alongside Jessica Mauboy, Tasman Keith featured on Midnight Oil’s song “First Nation”, the first track off their 12th Studio Album.
In early 2021, Tasman collaborated with Kwame to release the single “ONE”, a hard-hitting track that he performed live on the ABC’s The Set.
