About Sweet G

In the earliest days of rap’s birth, the night manager of New York’s Disco Fever club George “Sweet G” Godfrey would spend the last hour of his shift talking over the records he was spinning in an effort to get patrons who weren’t dancing involved and having fun. When the owner’s son, Sal Abbatiello, took over the business, he searched for another DJ who did the same practice and found Grandmaster Flash performing in a local park.

The first night of having Flash interact with the crowd over music was a successful experiment that eventually established Disco Fever as “the home of the rappers and the hottest hot spot in New York today” in 1983, and Sweet G was still a member of that scene. He released a handful of 12" singles in the early 80s, when rap was still in its infancy.
