Star Wars is an American sci-fi multi-media franchise created by George Lucas, founder of Lucasfilm Ltd, in 1977. At first, the original movie Star Wars (now titled Episode V: A New Hope) was meant to be a standalone film, but the success of the film gave way to a whole trilogy. Since then, hundreds of novels and comics, as well as series and games, have come out as well as their more successful movies.

In 2012, Lucasfilm was bought by The Walt Disney Company. This led to a revitalization of the franchise, keeping some things canon, and other previous publications non-canon (titled Legends).
