Solomon Popoli Linda(Or Solomon Ntsele) was a South African musician, singer and songwriter. He was born in 1909 near Pomeroy on a labor reserve. Sometime after 1933 Solomon started a singing group called The Evening Birds with his friends. The Group was named after a then disbanded choir that Solomon once sang in. He is best known for writing and recording the song, “Mbube”, which would later be popularly recreated as, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, in 1961 by the doo-wop group The Tokens. The song was popular at the time with many South Africans and it earned Solomon and his group recognition around the area. Despite this, he died in poverty in 1962.
