Small Leaks Sink Ships is an American progressive-rock band formed in Portland, Oregon.
The quartet is known for its powerful acoustic instrumentals and addictive melodies backed by hand-crafted synthetic beats to create emotionally evocative and atmospheric tracks, and for albums that blend these atmospheres together with close transitions between songs.
Their vocalists stylistically sing their lyrics in tandem on many songs, but double frequently as well.
Band members Judd Hancock (vocals, guitar, piano), London Van Rooy (vocals, drums, piano), Jim Mandel, (bass, guitar, piano), and Ryan Garner (keyboard, multi) have earned a reputation by sticking together through life-altering trials, such as Ryan Garner’s near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2010 and Judd Hancock’s 2011 battle with cancer, both of which put the band’s efforts on hold and heavily influenced their post-recovery music.
The band’s name references Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac, in which he writes:
Beware of little expenses; A small leak will sink a great ship, as Poor Richard says; and again, Who dainties love, shall beggars prove; and moreover, Fools make feasts, and wise men eat them.
