SKE48 is a Japanese girl group formed in 2008 by producer Yasushi Akimoto, who also created AKB48 and NMB48. The name “SKE” is an abbreviation for Sakae, the district in Nagoya where the group is based. The group consists of over 100 members who are divided into several teams, SKE48 Team S, SKE48 Team KII, SKE48 Team E, and SKE48 Trainee, each with their own set of activities.
SKE48 made their debut on October 5, 2008, with the single “Tsuyoki Mono Yo” and has since released over 30 singles and 2 albums, many of which have topped the Japanese music charts. Their music is known for its catchy tunes, upbeat tempo, and energetic choreography.
One of SKE48’s major achievements is their success in the annual AKB48 Group Senbatsu Sousenkyo, also known as the AKB48 General Election. The election is a popularity contest where fans vote for their favorite members, and the top-ranked members get to participate in the group’s next single. Many of SKE48’s members have consistently ranked high in the election, with Jurina Matsui placing second in 2013 and 2016 and winning the competition in 2018.
In addition to their music career, SKE48 has also ventured into acting, variety shows, and other forms of entertainment. Members have appeared in television dramas, movies, and commercials, and have hosted their own radio and television shows. SKE48 has also held numerous concerts and fan events throughout Japan, as well as overseas in countries such as Indonesia, Taiwan, and Singapore.
SKE48’s popularity has also led to the creation of their sub-unit, Love Crescendo.
