Siedah Garrett is a revered singer/songwriter best known for duetting with Michael Jackson on “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” and writing his signature anthem “Man In The Mirror.”
Garrett began her professional career as backing vocalist for D.J. Rogers. Things kicked into high gear when an audition for Quincy Jones brought her to the attention of Quincy and a host of other prominent producers who began employing her as a demo vocalist. It was through this that she became featured on Dennis Edwards' hit song “Don’t Look Any Further”. The song’s producer couldn’t wait for Chaka Khan to become available, so Garrett’s vocals were kept on the final recording.
Over her career, she has consistently worked as a writer and vocalist, touring with both Madonna and Michael Jackson. When Garrett left the Bad tour with Michael Jackson, her replacement was eventual pop/rock star Sheryl Crow. She even worked as a television host on Casey Kasem’s American Top 10.
In the late 90’s, Garrett joined British funk band The Brand New Heavies as a lead singer for their Shelter album, which spawned the single “Sometimes,” which ignited the neo-soul movement in the 2000s.
After years of success in the music industry, Garrett finally won her first Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media in 2008 as co-writer of Jennifer Hudson’s “Love You I Do” from the Academy Award-winning film 2006 Dreamgirls. The song itself was also nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards the year before.
Garrett continues to write and record, releasing the new single “G.H.E.T.T.O.” featuring Common in early 2017.
