Shelby Lynne Moorer was born in Virginia but raised in Mobile, Ala. When she was 17, she and her sister Allison Moorer witnessed their father murder their mother before taking his own life. She won the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist award in 1990 but grew tired of the slick country-pop that she was being steered toward. Her confessional album I Am Shelby Lynne, influenced by blues and pop rock, won her a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2001 even though it was her sixth album in more than a decade.
