About Satoshi Ashikawa

Satoshi Ashikawa (May 7, 1953 – July 28, 1983) was a Japanese musician, composer and producer.

He was one of the very first to introduce ambient music in Japan, as the record and book store he founded in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, named Art Vivant, was among the first to import Brian Eno’s Ambient series in the country.

7 years later, he would found a record label—in 1982—with Munetaka Tanaka; Sound Process is home to the Wave Notation series, which consists of three records: Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Music For Nine Post Cards, produced by Ashikawa himself, his only album Still Way, and Satsuki Shibano’s Erik Satie (France 1866-1925).

As said, Still Way is Ashikawa’s only record, as he would die in a car crash the year after its release.
