According to Saosin’s biography on Allmusic, the band’s name comes from a Chinese proverb that means “small heart,” as in “love cautiously.”
Saosin formed in 2003 with Anthony Green as the frontman, Pat McGarth as the drummer, Justin Shekoski as lead guitarist/vocalist, Zach Kennedy as bassist, and Beau Burchell as rhythm guitarist/vocalist. That same year, they released their EP Translating the Name.
In 2004, Green left the band to form Circa Survive, and shortly thereafter Cove Reber joined the band. During the summer of that year, due to their label’s (Capital Record) intentions, Saosin EP was released.
In 2006, Saosin, the self-titled album, was released, and was generally favored by fans and critics alike.
In 2008, Saosin released their live-album, Come Close. Later that year, they also released an EP titled The Grey.
In 2009, the band released their second studio album, In Search Of Solid Ground, which fared better on charts than did Saosin.
On July 21, 2010, the band parted ways with Cove Reber, and then went on hiatus as they tried to figure out what they would do about the lead vocals aspect of the band. During their hiatus from 2010 to 2014, there was a lot of speculation as to who would front the band: would it be Anthony Green because of his performance with the band on December 12, 2012; or would it be Tilian Pearson since he recorded two demos with the band?
In 2014, it was announced that Anthony Green would be returning to the band for a show and a tour during the summer. That same year, the band hinted that Green would be the frontman again in an interview with Alternative Press.
During the last week of January in 2015, the band did a tour with Green.
In 2016, Justin Shekoski parted ways with the band after thirteen years. He was later replaced by Phil Sgrosso of Wovenwar who’ll be with Saosin for their upcoming tour. On March 16, 2016, the band released new song, “The Silver String”, along with a video for their song, as well as announcing a new album, Along The Shadow, which will be released on May 20, 2016.
