About Sandie Shaw

One of the most successful British singers of the 1960s. Sandie Shaw (real name Sandra Ann Goodrich) was born in Dagenham, Essex, England on 26 February 1947. She had 3 UK number one hit singles the first of which was “(There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me” in 1964, followed by “Long Live Love” in 1965 and “Puppet On A String” (the UK’s Eurovision winning entry) in 1967. She had a further 5 top 10 singles including “Girl Don’t Come”, “I’ll Stop At Nothing”, Message Understood", Tomorrow" and “Monsieur Dupont”. She was the iconic female pop singer of the 1960s always singing in stockinged feet. She was the first British artist to win the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967 with “Puppet On A String”, a song she disliked as she thought the song unrepresentative of her repertoire of songs. She was discovered by pop singer Adam Faith who introduced her to his manager Eve Taylor who won her a contract with Pye Records in 1964 and gave her the stage name of Sandie Shaw. Many of her songs were written by Chris Andrews. She was also very popular in Europe and recorded most of her hit singles in French, Italian, Spanish and German. She also had her own TV series “The Sandie Shaw Supplement” in 1968. She married fashion designer Jeff Banks in 1968 and started her own fashion range. She was rediscovered in 1984 when Morrissey from the Smiths supplied the song “Hand in Glove” which returned her to the UK Top 40 for the first time in 15 years. She retired from music in 2013 and is now a psychotherapist. She was made an MBE in the 2017 New Years Honors list for services to music.
